For ME204 Mechanical Design, our team of four was tasked to produce a balsa structure that complied with a given design envelope and was able to hold at least 15 pounds. The structure was design to optimize the strength to weight ratio. Different beam shapes were used for modeling and construction. The structure was 3D modeled and analyzed using FEA in Siemens NX. Our team ran multiple designs, then chose the one with the highest optimization potential. The final design was crafted out of balsa wood, paying close attention to cutting angles, gusset placement, and build quality. Our structure was successful and supported a load of 46 lbf.
