For ME245 Solids Lab, my teammate and I decided to create a protective structure that would allow the dissipation of kinetic energy while still having the opportunity to harvest it. The project was Inspired by reactive armors and helmet technology. In the future, the system could be used to collect energy from micro collisions during space travel. The collisions were recorded with a digital camera, and displacement was measured with an LVDT device. The image and data processing were performed in MATLAB. The results showed a reduction of displacement in the base plate, we are looking forward to further develop this design and implement and harvest the dissipated energy.
