Wind Farm Layout

Description

For ME241 Fluids Lab, our team of four decided to test the voltage output of multiple configurations of wind turbines in a wind farm. Our objective was to compare the results obtained with the recommended practices to solve the Wind Farm Layout Optimization Problem (WFLOP). Scaled turbine models were constructed with a generator. It was essential to keep the model to scale to mimic the distances as close as possible and to obtain relevant results. The model was tested in a unidirectional wind tunnel at a single speed while changing the distance and configuration of the turbines. The voltage output was measured, and the results were plotted. As shown in the poster below, our team found that the industry standards often resulted in an optimal energy yield with the exception of a back to back turbine arrangement, which was shown to have the potential for improvement.
